Upsilon Alpha | Huston-Tillotson University - Austin

History

The Upsilon Alpha Chapter is located on the campus Huston-Tillotson University.  It is the only Historically Black University (HBCU) in Austin, TX.  ​The Chapter was chartered March 4, 1940 at Tillotson College in Austin, Texas.  Algerene M. Craig was a charter member of Chi Chapter; which was the Chapter at Samuel Huston College and was the first undergraduate chapter President.  The Chapter was re-chartered after the merger of Sam Huston College and Tillotson College (Huston-Tillotson University).
Chapter Highlight:
  • Soror Bernice Hart, became one of the first African-American women to receive a Master’s Degree from the University of Texas, but received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Huston-Tillotson.  Austin Independent School District named Hart Elementary school after her in 1998.
  • Four chapter members have been crowned Miss Huston-Tillotson University, since 2007.
  • Two members were representatives in Miss UNCF pageant.
​Chapter Meeting
The Upsilon Alpha Chapter meetings are typically held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.  This is subject to change based on member's class schedule.
