History of Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter
The Austin Graduate Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter was organized on Blackshear Elementary School Campus, February 18, 1940, by Lullelia W. Harrison, Southern Region Director and a member of Lambda Zeta Chapter, Houston, Texas. The Charter Members are: *Algerene M. Craig, *Myrtle Cooke, *Virgie C. DeWitty, *Jessie Ford Grant, *Rosby L. King, *Della J. Phillips *Bessie Lomax Jones, and *Thelma Slider. Their major aims were to enlarge the member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and to emphasize the “Finer Womanhood” philosophy of the National Organization. *Algerene M. Craig was a charter member Chi Chapter, undergraduate chapter at Samuel Huston College (Now Huston-Tillotson University) and the Chapter’s first President.
The Chapter immediately became actively involved in working with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority on the regional and national level. Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter hosted its first Southern Regional Conference in November of 1946.
To better meet the needs of the Chapter, to serve the community and promote and provide cultural activities, especially youth activities a building was purchased in 1967 (See Zeta Cultural Corner). Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter opened an educational component of the Stork's Nest on July 18, 1978. Stork's Nest is a National Project that provides educational services to disadvantaged mothers (prenatal and postnatal care).
Presently, Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter sponsors and participates in such programs NAACP (Life Member), United Negro College Fund, National Council of Negro Women, Educational Component of the Stork’s Nest, host Christmas and Easter parties for disadvantaged children; volunteer service to St. David’s Hospital and nursing homes; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Observance (M. L. King, Jr., Traveling Display on the Life and Times produced in 1986); Voter Registration Drive, and various ZHOPE programs designed to “Help Other People Excel through Mind, Body, and Spirit.
